ENT examining a patient's nose for nasal polyps

Nasal Polyps Causes

Is your nose always stuffed up? Does it seem like you’re constantly getting infections or a clogged nose? Sometimes, there really is a nasal obstruction called a nasal polyp.

Nasal polyps are usually soft, non-malignant growths that occur from inflammation. Polyps have been linked to allergies, asthma, and recurring nasal infections.

Do Nasal Polyps Cause Mucus?

Do Nasal Polyps Cause Mucus?

Polyps appear to form when inflammation causes fluid to build up. Because they can obstruct the nasal passage, they prevent mucus from draining properly and make you feel congested.

Symptoms of polyps are similar to that of the common cold including:

  • Mucus and post-nasal drip
  • Difficulty smelling or tasting
  • Headaches and facial pain
  • Snoring
  • Bleeding

Nasal obstructions like polyps should be evaluated for treatment because they can cause chronic infections. More serious symptoms such as a change in vision or difficulty breathing should be seen right away.
